The M Word

Gail Hennessy

What do you do when the world starts to melt and morph around you, blurring the boundaries of reality?

Published by Girls on Key (2019) Gail Hennessy takes the reader on a journey navigating the recesses of the mind. Written with humour and pathos, she documents her voyage through the realms of post-natal psychosis and unravels the narratives that informed her healing.

Gail Hennessy’s poetry has been published in newspapers, literary supplements, journals and anthologies. Her poetry has won local and national prizes. In 2010 her first collection Witnessing drew on her PhD ‘Testimonio: Witnessing my Mother’s Life, Race and Identity in Twentieth Century Australia’. This collection included published and new poems that referenced her Indigenous heritage.

Her second collection of poetry Written on Water was published in 2017 by Flying Island Books.

This latest collection, The M Word is a memoir of her experiences of two encounters with postnatal psychosis, written to speak out against the stigma attached to mental illness, and to give hope for recovery.
