The 2018 Dorothea Mackellar Poetry Awards for School Children

Since 1984, the Dorothea Mackellar Poetry Awards – a national competition – has provided children from K-12 an opportunity to write their own poetic masterpieces.

The awards are based in the Mackellar Centre in Gunnedah, NSW; a building dedicated to Dorothea herself, exhibiting a number of artefacts, photographs as well as Jean Isherwood’s painting collection depicting Dorothea Mackellar’s poem, ‘My Country’.

Eligibility: Only students enrolled in Australian education facilities are eligible to enter. Entries open 1st March 2018.

Max. 80 lines; no illustrations, graphics or decorations.

Optional Theme: ‘I Have Promises To Keep’.

HOW TO ENTER: ONLINE group entries from schools are preferred—coordinated, collated and submitted through a teacher or parent.
