Talks of interest at Sydney Mechanics’ School of Arts, 3–5 Sept 2019

Sydney Mechanics’ School of Arts (SMSA) has three talks coming up in History Week and Adult Education Week. This is the Sydney venue of the FAW NSW Bi-Annual Delegates Meetings and AGM.


The 2019 Carmichael Lecture on Education: Jo Karaolis AM on ‘What are Schools for?”

Former Teacher of the Year Jo Karaolis AM draws on a life time in education as a teacher and school principal to consider a fundamental question she believes doesn’t get asked enough: “What are schools for?” The Carmichael Lecture on Education honours the pioneering work of the Reverend Henry Carmichael in not only taking the leading role in the establishment of our organisation in 1833, but of advancing Adult Education and education generally in the early years of settlement. Dr Carmichael was inducted into the International Adult and Continuing Education Hall of Fame in 2016.
Date: Tuesday, 3 September 2019
Time: 6:30pm for 7:00-8:00pm lecture, followed by a cocktail reception concluding at 9:00pm.

Lying for the Admiralty with Margaret Cameron-Ash

How could Captain Cook, supposedly ‘the greatest navigator of his age’, have missed major coastal features such as the Bass Strait and Port Jackson? Re-examining Cook’s original journals and charts, Margaret Cameron-Ash argues that he didn’t miss them. Rather, he obfuscated them, obeying secret orders from the Admiralty.

50 Secrets of Surry Hills and Redfern with Michael Bodey

Journalist and speechwriter Michael Bodey explores the rich history and the personal stories, oddities and peccadilloes of Redfern and Surry Hills. Take an entertaining ride through two idiosyncratic suburbs that evolved from once scrubby grasslands to become multicultural enclaves, home to early Australian industry and spiritual home to Indigenous Australians.
