Furphy Literary Award National Short Story Competition

Closing date: 30 April 2021

This year’s theme is ‘Australian Life (in all its diversity)’. The competition welcomes fiction and non-fiction entries under 5,000 words from writers aged 18+.

First place wins $15,000, second place $3,000, and third place $2,000. Select finalists will receive publication in the 2021 Furphy Anthology.

Storytelling is part of Furphy’s DNA. During WWI, Australian soldiers would trade wild tales (known as ‘furphies’) behind Furphy water carts. The Awards honour both the ‘furphy’, and Joseph Furphy – brother of Furphy founder John Furphy, and author of the Australian classic Such is Life.
